Dear Shell Creek Parents and Community,
Welcome back to a new school year! The Shell Creek teaching staff is excited to begin a new journey! They have worked diligently over the summer to grow as professionals (through workshops as well as collaborating with other staff members) while also taking some important time to ‘recharge’. We are certainly blessed to have an excellent teaching staff at Shell Creek Elementary! There is no doubt about how much the teachers here truly love their students!
At Shell Creek Elementary, we will continue to live out the Lakeview Community Schools mission. Our mission states that, ‘We strive to build a strong academic foundation with educational opportunities that develop character and the mindset needed for all students to be successful members of their community’. Academics, represented by a helmet, include achievement, knowledge, and success in school. Character, represented by a hammer, includes hard work, integrity, honesty, humility, trustworthiness, and respect for others. Mindset, represented by a shield, includes having a positive attitude, perseverance, confidence, resiliency, and courage.
We celebrated many successes last school year and expect to build upon that this year. Many of our students were honored with weekly and/or monthly awards. Additionally, in grades 3-6, students showed a great deal of academic improvement through their NWEA MAP testing. We will continue to test 3rd-6th graders twice a year. It is always a joy to witness students improving academically.
Furthermore, teachers and students celebrate many small successes every day. Many teachers use Twitter to share daily happenings. I encourage you to follow us on Twitter @SCELEMSCHOOL. Also, we invite you to be part of our school day as much as your time allows. Teachers are often looking for parents to assist in various forms throughout the school day. Please feel free to openly express your desire to help. Additionally, we have an active PTO organization and will continue to rely heavily on their support this next year.
As we have done in the past, we will have an Open House the night before schools starts. This year, it will take place from 5:30-7:00 on August 15th. Students are encouraged to come bring in materials and meet their teacher. Students will find out who their teacher is that night.
School will start on August 16th and run from 8:05-11:25. Normal school hours will be 8:05-3:20. Breakfast will be served from 7:30-8:00, including breakfast on August 16th. Please have your child either go directly to the cafeteria for breakfast or to the gymnasium first thing each morning.
When dropping your child off in the morning, please follow the arrows and use only the west side of the school. Please enter from the dirt road west of the parking lot and drop off with your vehicle facing north. Use the lane closest to the school to drop off your child. If you need to get out of your vehicle to assist your child or meet with school personnel, please use the parking lot and walk with your student across traffic. When picking up your child, feel free to use either the east or west side of the school. We prefer K-2 students to leave the building from the east while 3-6 students will leave from the west. However, family accommodations will be made.
For more information, please access the school’s website at: http://shellhome.lakeviewcs.esu7.org. Lastly, I want to encourage you to partner with us in increasing the academic progress of your child. Your role as ‘parent’ is second to none!
Some tips include:
  1. Limiting the amount of ‘screen’ time you allow for your child each day. (One colleague mentioned that he would only allow screen time equal to the amount of time they spent outside playing)
  2. Making sure that your child follows a set bedtime (9-11 hours of sleep is recommended for students ages 6 to 13).
  3. Supporting your child’s reading at home (simply 15-20 minutes at home each night can really pay off over the course of the year!!)
  4. Providing a quiet place for your child to do homework. Be consistent with location as well as time of day that homework is to be completed (ex. immediately when the student gets home or immediately after supper, etc.)
  5. Encouraging your child to ask the teacher for help. This is tough for some students to do, but is a good life skill to develop.
  6. Reinforcing expectations that your child follows school rules and listens to adults.

Respectfully,

Josh Graves
